Income Tax Filing Deadline Extended for 2015

If you are one to wait until the last minute to file your income tax, then you are in luck this year! Thanks to an error at the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), the 2015 tax filing deadline for personal returns has been pushed ahead to May 5, 2015.

This extension was granted last year due to downtime in the CRA’s NETfile system over security concerns. This year, a notice from the CRA to tax preparers stated, in error, that, “All returns transmitted electronically up until 3:00 a.m., Eastern Time, Tuesday, May 5, 2015, will be considered as filed on time.”

This notice intended to refer to forms that needed to be resubmitted after being asked for amendments, but caused confusion with many tax preparers. Revenue Minister Kerry-Lynne Findlay decided that to avoid penalty over this confusion, those returns filed between April 30, 2015 and May 5, 2015 would not be penalized.

If you’re scrambling to get your taxes done last minute, plan ahead next year. We don’t expect the CRA to make the same mistake again!
